Specialty Care 2009 Christmas Party

A Night of Magic and Hope

Angel 34 Tree Icon

The Specialty Care Christmas Party, on December 8th at Barnhouse Village, brought smiles and hugs. The BIG attraction (Santa) did not disappoint the children. While they waited to meet Santa the children participated in Letters to Santa, Holiday Ornament Making, Games, and a Magic Show.

Santa needed some help with toys this year since the Elves were busy making toys for his Christmas Eve trip. A heart felt thank you to Missing Piece and its Patrons and Macy’s Employees for the donated gifts for Santa to handout.

7 Year Old Thinks of Others and Brings HOPE

On His Birthday

Angel 34 Brendan Alvino Nazareth Day 01 Thumb Angel 34 Brendan Alvino Nazareth Day 03 Thumb

Brendan Alvino was looking forward to his 7th Birthday but this year Brendan wanted to do something different, he wanted to help other children. After talking it over with his mom and dad they visited the internet to look at local organizations that could use their help. There were so many he didn’t know which one to choose until Fran (Hall) Rowley, a family friend and field hockey coach at Pen Argyl came into the picture. Fran has been a big supporter of a local charity called Angel 34 and she suggested they visit the Angel 34 Foundation web-site.

While visiting the web-site Brendan noticed the ICEE program and truck that the foundation uses to create awareness and raise funds for children battling cancer but more importantly it brings comfort to children battling cancer. Each year the Angel 34 Foundation provides ICEE machines to Pediatric Children Hospitals while providing other services and programs to children of the Lehigh Valley.. The program was started by Nicole Sheriff the founder of Angel 34 in the fall of 2003. During her own battle with cancer Nicole found that this cool summer drink helps off set the side effects of chemo and radiation treatments. This immediately drew Brendan’s attention because not only did he like to drink ICEE’s but he could help other children. Brendan had his mom call Doug Sheriff, president of Angel 34 to discuss his request.

Once the call was made a day and time was set, Nazareth Day July 18th, at Missing Piece in Nazareth. Before the 18th Brendan had other things he needed to accomplish. At his church Brendan told the congregation about his plans and members offered donations for Angel 34 and others made plans to attend the event. After emptying his and his sister Cameron’s Piggy Banks and combining it with the money collected, Brendan had raised $124.00 even before his ICEE Day sale.

On July 18th Brendan and 3 of his best friends (Aidan Palochik, Eli Laurin, and Anthony Harris) arrived at Missing Piece and sold ICEE’s from 12 noon to 2 PM. Each of the boys took turns serving up Cherry and Coke Icee’s to the patrons of Missing Piece and travelers just stopping by to see what was going on. The boys even took the time to enjoy their favorite flavors, several times.

All the boys received Earn Your Wing T-Shirts and Gold Ribbon Pins. And for his thoughtfulness and compassion for other children Brendan received the Angel 34 Angel Pin that is given to those who make a difference in the lives of other children.

The day ended with Brendan presenting the money he collected plus his own birthday money to Doug and Linda Sheriff. In just 2 hours Brendan and his friends raised $310.00 and a grand total of $434.00 for children battling cancer in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding communities. For one day Angels were present at Missing Piece and were serving ICEE’s while teaching all of us that “Who you are does make a difference”.

Michael Flesher wanted to do a project that not only would meet the requirements for his Eagle Scout Project but make an impact for years to come. In the summer of 2008 Michael and his dad Carl visited Angel Field and looked over several projects that Angel 34 was preparing to do. The one project that Michael chose was the Bird Sanctuary located at the lower portion of Angel Field. The new Bird Sanctuary will not only provide a habitat for birds to nest and feed but will give visiting children at Angel Field an educational opportunity to learn about wildlife and too photograph them in their natural habitat. Since their first visit to Angel Field Michael has put in over 100 hours on his project. Items that were purchased by Michael’s fundraising endeavors: 250lbs of bird feed, bat house, several hand made birdhouses, assorted birdfeeders (Oriole Feeder, Finch Feeders, Suet Feeders, Peanut Feeder, Woodpecker Feeders), bird viewing telescope, bird book, and song bird CD.

Bee a Bear of HOPE for Children Battling Cancer. Proceeds from the sale of the Bee Bear help support the Angel 34 Foundation and its mission, "For Every Child to have their own Angel during their battle with cancer".

The Angel 34 Foundation was founded in the fall of 2003 by Nicole Sheriff during her own battle with Ewing Sarcoma. It was during her battle with cancer that Nicole witnessed the hardships and burdens that are placed on families and the many side effects that are associated with cancer treatments. Out of the compassion for every child she came across she vowed to make a difference in that child's life.

When you purchase your BEE Bear you can take the Bear home with you or you can ADOPT the Bear for a child battling cancer. The Bear will be delivered by the ICEE BEAR to local hospitals and given out to children at Angel Field when they visit. You can also adopt the bear at Missing Piece in Nazereth (610-759-4033).

Play Ball!

If you look under the month of May in the 2008 Angel of Hope Calendar you will see a future player for the Phillies. Jacob is a BIG Phillies fan and on May 3rd the Angel 34 Foundation had the privilege of making a future baseball players dream come true. Jacob Kosierowski, his parents (Bridget - Joe) and friend Charlie were treated to a Phillies game complements of Kevin Kovacs and the Phillies Organization (Derek Schuster). Jake and Family were picked up in a white limo at Angel Field and delivered to the front door of Citizens Park. Once he arrived his schedule was filled for the next 5 hours.

Jake and Charlie got the opportunity to sit in the broadcast booth, be on the field for batting practice,Got a behind the scenes tour, have dinner in the Diamond Club section and sit right next to the Phillies dugout during the game. Each of the boys were treated with a goodie bag and Charlie had a ball tossed to him during the game by Pat Burrell. Unfortunately the Phillies lost in extra innings but by the smiles on the faces that didn't matter.

PA State Senator Lisa Boscola meets Lizzie

Dear Mr. Sheriff:

I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank you for taking the time to meet with me to discuss the Angel 34 Foundation.

This program, founded by your daughter Nicole during her battle with Ewing Sarcoma, has assisted many people to date and I am sure is due to help many more in the future. The donations of ICEE machines to hospitals, aid to children and families, the continuous search for a cure and providing scholarships to those in need is highly regarded and impressive. The therapy dog program is remarkable and I am glad to see that it is up and running with the newest addition to Angel 34, Lizzie.

Thank you, again, for taking the time to introduce me to the Angel 34 Foundation. Please know that my support of this program will not waver and I will continue to seek funding in Harrisburg. Please feel free to call upon me anytime regarding this or any state-related matter.

Sincerely,
Lisa M. Boscola
