The ICEE Story
During her battle with cancer Nicole was always looking for ways to help ease the pain for herself but was always concerned for other children going through the same fate. Nicole used visualization and deep breathing exercises to help her take her medication. She then instructed the nurses on her method which was then used with other patients. She would take the time to talk to other children about procedures that they would soon go through or about the positive side of wearing a wig. She also found the time to have stuffed animals handed out to children who had no one to cling onto while going though daily treatments. But the one thing that really helped her through all her treatments and is now part of her legacy, is the ICEE.
ICEEs are those cool summer treats that people enjoy over the summer that refresh the body and give you brain freeze when taken in too fast. It was during her treatments that Nicole learned that this simple inexpensive drink could help her and others offset some of the side effects of cancer treatments.
Nicole learned that this amazing drink had medicinal purposes. The ICEE would help break the mucousitis that develops with chemo treatment which makes it difficult to swallow; it help keep her stay hydrated and relieved pain associated with mouth sores, and it helped soothe stomach pain and was the only thing she could keep down.
After leaving the hospital, Nicole wanted to give back to those who had helped her and to help those children who would be going through what she did. With the help of Deb Anthony, Nicole?s field hockey coach, and Mike Schneider, her athletic director at Northampton high school, Nicole began raising money to purchase ICEE machines for hospitals where she had been treated. What started out as a small fund-raiser turned into something bigger.
By the end of field hockey season, the field hockey teams and schools in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding communities had raised over $15,000 for Nicole?s cause. Nicole, knowing the cost for a new machine would be $7,000, was ready to purchase two machines. What would happen next was a blessing.
The local contact for The ICEE Company learned of Nicole’s idea and made machines available at much lower price and provided a free one year maintenance deal. On April 14, 2004, Nicole’s 15th birthday, the first ICEE machine was dedicated to the Lehigh Valley Hospital. The machine had its first recipient within 5 minutes of the machine being operational. Since then, two other machines have been installed in satellite out patient treatment facilities and two others have been requested by Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
The story does not end here. After Nicole’s passing, her parents contacted The ICEE Company in Ontario, California to see if they would like to help out with Nicole’s cause. To help Nicole’s wishes come true, The ICEE Company has designed a program called “Angel 34 ICEE Program”. This program would allow any Children’s Hospital in the United States to request an ICEE Machine FREE OF CHARGE with Angel 34 supplying the syrup.
